HST new shed courtesy of the Heritage Lottery Fund
The photographs below show the preparatory work which needed to be done by the HST volunteers before any other work could be done. The volunteers had to measure and dig holes for the steel foundations, insert the foundations then make sure that the foundations were square and exactly in line with one another. Concrete was then poured into every hole and allowed to set. Holes had to be drilled into every piece of the steel girders for the framework and they had to be exactly true with other holes in other pieces of steelwork.
The photographs below were taken by Gary Hibbs and Dave Shore. Click the thumbnails to open a larger picture.
The girders, and other associated pieces of steelwork/brackets then had to be welded, primed, undercoated and glossed ready for erection. A building company was then contracted to erect the basic framework of the shed with HST volunteers lending a hand where they could.
When the steelwork had been erected the next stage in the process was to dig out and level all the soil under and at the side of the tracks under the steel framework. Concrete was then poured and levelled to encase the tracks and framework.
The next stage is the cladding of the sides and fitting of the doors. The cladding has been completed and fitting of the doors is awaited. The first six photographs below were taken by John Wade and the remainder by Andrew Wilson.
The penultimate stage was to fit the roller shutter doors with wicket gates to secure the shed against the elements. The pictures below were taken by Andrew Wilson.
The final stage of the construction is to fit steelwork to the top apex of the shed.
